Every five years they organize the SAIL Amsterdam event. The last time was in 2015 and I managed to stare and gape at all the ships assembled in one place.
The tall ships represent the Golden Age of Sail. A period in human history where these ships were the absolute biggest and fastest for transporting goods across the seas and oceans. It isn’t until the advent of more efficient steam engines and propulsion screws that the use of sailing ships started to decline.
In current times all cargo shipping is done by behemoths and the only time you can still see, smell and touch these amazing sailing beauties is during events like this.
Next SAIL will be in 2020, and I am planning to be there and again imagine the days of yore in a much more romantic way then the truth could have been.
